The Cows

The Heifers

Miniature cattle cost $1,800 to $6,500 depending on the size, markings and color.  (A good standard Jersey sold as a family milk cow will cost $1,400 to $2,800.)  Although small-breed cattle may cost more initially, they have some interesting advantages including:

  • Lower maintenance requirements, superior grass conversion and grazing ability
  • Calving ease and a relatively lower rate of dystocia
  • High fertility rates
  • High milk butterfat, 4.84% butterfat and 3.95% protein
  • Bulls are also small, ranging from 540 to 820 kg (1200 to 1600 lbs)

The Bulls

Originally bred in the Channel Island of Jersey, the Jersey breed is best known for the high butterfat content of the milk and the natural marbling and tenderness of the meat.

The popularity of miniature jersey cattle is now on the rise with their calm and docile, inquisitive nature, lovely colors and features, and compatibility ease with small acerage homestead and family farms.  The are a wonderful choice for first time owners.

Typical miniatures are between 36-46 inches (90-120 cm) in height (cow and bulls), and weigh approximately 800-1200 lbs.  We have found that 39 to 42 inch height is the most ideal for a family small-breed milk cow for ease of milking.

Jerseys come in all shades of brown, from light tan to almost black.  They are frequently fawn in color and can also be "painted" - brown/tan and white.  All purebred Jerseys have a lighter band across their muzzle, a dark switch (long hair on the end of the tail), and black hooves.
